MONDAY 29TH AUGUST 2011 (BM, EWA , R)
Karl studied intensely, working long into the night. The scholarships at MIT were very generous but they were hard to win. Brenda and Marvin encouraged him to the best of their ability, knowing they were out of their league. Karl was up against complex equations and long essays. All the same, he frequently told them that their love and support spurred him on.
Mr Griffin â he was a godsend. The man had spent a great many hours working with Karl, giving him free tuition. They were great friends; he seemed to understand Karl and clearly wanted the best for him. Brenda sent him a bottle of champagne at the end of Karlâs time at Beaton Place High School.
They were so proud â he would be the first person in the family to attend a top academic college. Deep down inside, they knew they would have been proud of him whether he went to college or not, yet it was still a significant thing for their family. Karl was unprecedented and that made them feel special too. They tried their best to take the time to reassure him, to pour love onto him, telling him repeatedly that they were for him and not against him in all of his decisions.
But his sense of isolation held a secret power over him; more so than his surrogate family might have suspected. He felt the most wanted when he won â that was something he had learned early on â and competition excited him. There was only one position that mattered though.
The desire to win had become his compulsion, his drug.
FALL 2011 (BM, EWA , R)
The journey from Oak Lawn, Dallas to MIT.
One thousand one hundred and seventy five miles, six stops, passing the halfway point at Hales Crossroads, a horrible hotel in Knoxville Tennessee and the arrival. The driving shared between Jasper, Darren, Marvin, Karl and Brenda. Jasperâs driving was in a class of its own.
Thirty five hours, twenty seven minutes.
Brenda, Marvin, Jasper and Darren â all of them accompanied Karl to the Massachusetts campus during the Fall of 2011, giving him the biggest group bear hug they could manage just before they left.
Alone in his single dorm room, Karl wept profusely, knowing he had people on the earth who loved him â despite his flaws and his weaknesses. It was one of those rare moments in his life in which he knew, really knew, that someone actually cared about him.
SEPTEMBER 2011 (BM, EWA , R)
MIT challenged Karl on every level. Nothing was easy, hard work and dedication were only two of the components of success. You also needed money.
She approached him as he sat alone in a corner seat in the student bar, at the end of the first week. He was flattered. She made it abundantly plain that she had been watching him and thought that they might make a lovely couple. She tried to smile as she spoke but it seemed strained. Later on Karl found out she was still recovering from the effects of plastic surgery.
